ICELANDIC NATURE

Just north of Deildartunguhver are Krauma – natural pools. The natural pools contain clean and clear water, directly from Deildartunguhver, which is cooled down by heat exchangers. The pools therefore contain only hot spring water.

There are six pools, five hot and one cold. No disinfectants are added to the water, but its purity is ensured by a very high water flow into the pools.

The restaurant seats 70 people and has an outdoor area. The emphasis is on fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

The most water-rich spring in Europe

Department of Language Studies

Deildartunguhver in Reykholtsdalur is the most water-rich hot spring in Europe. The hot spring is a clear example of the terrifying energy that lives in the earth, as the bubbling hot spring spews out about 180 liters of 100°C hot water per second. This natural resource has undoubtedly been used for washing and cooking for centuries, but 80 to 90 years ago, a 600-meter-long log was built to transport steam to the old house in Deildartungu. The steam could be used to heat the house and boil food in a steam pot, in addition to allowing residents to take a hot shower and sauna, which were considered unique amenities at the time.
